Many people still have some reservations about obtaining a degree online. There are a few questions always ringing in their mind. They are sceptic about the value of online degrees and think they will have a disadvantage to the students who acquired their degrees from brick and mortar institutions. Additionally, students also give a thought upon whether future employers will favour students from traditional colleges or them.

Employer’s View

Employers were earlier quite sceptical about quality of education at online colleges. According to a study in 2001, around 29 percent employers said they would never mull over appointing an employee who acquired degree through online medium. Rest 21 percent said they may hire online degree holders or they simply did not care. (Source: goo.gl/zMryqR)

Of late, a number of prominent universities have started to provide online degree programmes. As many reputable universities and colleges have entered the online education sector, more and more employers have begun to let go of their scepticisms about online degrees. They have started to understand the quality of learning received through online education is equal or even in some cases, better than traditional education medium. Many employers these days encourage their employees to enrol in online classes to sharpen the overall skill-set and grow in their careers.

Some employers even favour to hire online learners due to the characteristics they possess. Modern day employers consider online students as self-motivated, disciplined and dedicated towards the growth of organisations.

However, employers give merit to online degrees if you have applicable work experience in the professional sector. Experience almost always winds over the educational degree requirements. Online learners can sell themselves by showing relevant work experience on their resume.

As the mobile phone has become a huge development and a necessity in our lives these days, it can actually be used to a great extent for educational purposes in Nigeria. Mobile technology can provide great amount of opportunities in the world of education as it can support various educational tools that may aid the learning process.

“The transformation of telecommunications in Nigeria since the licensing of three Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) operators in 2001 and a fourth one in 2004 has been astounding. According to an analysis on Nigeria’s mobile market by BuddeComm, Nigeria has overtaken South Africa to become the continent’s largest mobile market with over 90 million subscribers and yet market penetration stands at only around 57% in mid 2011. The telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria are MTN, GLOBACOM, Bharti Airtel, Etisalat, Visafone, M-Tel, Intercellular, Multi-links, Starcomms and Reliance.”

As the telecommunication sector and the education sector both have undergone change and evolved for the better, we cannot undermine the possibilities of the mobile phone becoming one of the most effective tools in education sector. As mobile companies are introducing data plans for mobile phones, smartphones and tabs, the students of Nigeria can now study distance learning courses of UK universities from the comfort of their own home. The growth of mobile technology and the fact that mobile or handheld devices have penetrated lives in Nigeria goes to prove that mobile devices can support classroom learning.

“Mobile learning emphasizes integration of learning with life and work, so that education is no longer seen as a separate activity that has to take place in a school, university or other establishment” (IITE Policy brief)

The data plans that the GSM operators have to offer will allow students to connect to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook to access instruction. These data plans will also allow students to access the web through their handheld devices. With the help of the data plans, students will be able to download audio material. They will also have access to helpful tools like wikis, e-dictionary, blog site, e-books, etc. These will help students study whenever they want, wherever they want without having to buy any study material.

The operators also allow people to stream videos and audio and also share them with others with the help of Short Messaging Services (SMS) and Multimedia services. Operators will also allow students to chat to with one another or even clarify doubts with the support team. Mobile learning is not just a fad but a huge step in the world of education, enabling people from various places to study.
